Big Charity Giveback – Stop 9 (SASH)

It’s time for another Big Charity Giveback! We’re now onto our ninth Big Charity Giveback, of which was to the SASH team.

SASH is a youth homelessness charity that works across York, North and East Yorkshire, helping young people aged 16-25 who are facing homelessness.

They do not run a hostel or own any property. The accommodation they offer is through their Nightstop and Supported Lodgings services, which rely on volunteer ‘hosts’ who offer a spare room in their own home. Their services are as much about supporting young people to resolve the problems which have led to them becoming homeless as they are about putting a roof over their head. Part of this support is provided through their SASH Active programme.

We spoke to Jenna, community fundraiser at SASH, about what she thinks is the most rewarding aspect of their work, here is what she said:

This is one of my favourite questions and so easy to answer! I love my job engaging the community with the work we do supporting local, young people facing homelessness. The most rewarding part is seeing a young person we have or are supporting working with and seeing the changes in them. They often come to us with not only housing issues but with a low confidence, low mood, a beaten down by life look and lacking a can do attitude. It is amazing to see the changes once they not only have a safe and sound home but also the support network around them to show them how amazing they can be and show them the things they are capable of in life. We often have young people popping by the office so I often get to see this amazing side of our work.

At the moment their office is closed, but as soon as their office is back open we will make sure to take a visit and drop off some treats for their team to say thank you.

But how can you help?

The best way to support SASH at the moment is to get involved in their Life after Lockdown campaign. They are aiming to raise 50k to enable them to run their emergency Nightstop service for 3 months. You can donate here directly or they encouraging people to set up their own social media fundraisers too.

Whilst your at home, why not take part in a fundraising activity at home and get your friends and family to donate? Here are a few ideas from Team York Pi Jam:

  • Virtual Coffee Morning
  • Laps around your garden
  • Climb your steps
  • Silly haircut
  • Grow your beard

Huge thanks from the York Pi Jam team to the SASH team for everything they do.

Stay safe!
