Welcome back! Hope you’re all keeping well. We’re now onto our eighth Big Charity Giveback, of which was to the IDAS team.
IDAS is the largest specialist charity in Yorkshire supporting anyone experiencing or affected by domestic abuse or sexual violence.
Their services include refuge accommodation, community based support, peer mentoring, group work and access to a free, confidential out of hours’ helpline.
Their teams of accredited specialist workers support people throughout the criminal justice system in addition to providing emotional support and safety planning advice.
We spoke to Jo, the lead refuge practitioner at IDAS, about what she thinks is the most rewarding aspect of their work, here is what she said:
I think the best part of my job and particularly working for IDAS is that it is independent and we have specialist support workers. We are able to support victims to live free from Domestic Abuse through empowerment and support to build confidence to make their own choices to determine their own future . I work in the refuges and support women and children through their journey of having to flee their family home right until they resettle in their new homes. It is so nice to see how much a person or family can grow in confidence and move on to have a save and better life with the support that IDAS can provide.Jo from IDAS
We wanted to treat the team at IDAS with just a small token of our appreciation, and hopefully the amazing team can enjoy some Quality Street’s and a cup of tea that we have sent as part of our Giveback – their work is hugely appreciated by the local community and we hope their team can have a little tea break.
But how can you help?
Throughout the pandemic, IDAS have been working hard to support victims through COVID-19. To support them to continue helping people in York, you can make a donation (if you are able to) via JustGiving: https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/IDASCovid19Appeal. All fundraisers and donors mean the world to them – thank you for any support you can give.
Whilst your at home, why not take part in a fundraising activity at home and get your friends and family to donate? Here are a few ideas from Team York Pi Jam:
- Virtual Coffee Morning
- Laps around your garden
- Climb your steps
- Silly haircut
- Grow your beard
Keep an eye out for the next blog post of the other charities who we are supporting.
